Comparing water samples

On a field trip to Hovey Lake, seventh grade students at Mt. Vernon Junior High School in Mt. Vernon, Indiana learned about water and soil pollution, as well as the importance of preserving wetlands and wildlife. They also developed a greater knowledge of the scientific process.

Students tested soil at Twin Swamps and water from Hovey Lake for a variety of pollutants. The skills they learned included using microscopes to identify organisms, mapping pollutants, and preparing and presenting scientific data to the Global Water Sampling Data website.
