Medicine Hat Nitrogen Complex

Picture2

Emergency response training

CF Industries manufactures two nitrogen fertilizer products at the Medicine Hat complex: anhydrous ammonia and granular urea.

Anhydrous ammonia is produced using air, water, and natural gas. Each of the Medicine Hat complex’s two ammonia plants can produce approximately 1750 tons per day of product. The ammonia production process includes five steps: raw materials preparation, hydrogen generation, gas purification, ammonia synthesis, and refrigeration.

Granular urea is produced using anhydrous ammonia and carbon dioxide (CO2), a byproduct of the ammonia production process. The complex’s urea plant has a capacity of approximately 2250 tons each day. The urea production process includes three steps: urea synthesis, urea purification, and granulation.
