Anhydrous ammonia, which contains 82 percent nitrogen, is the
most concentrated nitrogen fertilizer, as well as the “basic”
nitrogen product that manufacturers upgrade into other nitrogen
fertilizers such as urea and UAN solution.
It is also a product with widespread industrial uses, including
environmental control applications.
Because of its high nitrogen content, anhydrous ammonia is often the
most cost-effective nitrogen fertilizer. A gas under ambient
conditions but a liquid when refrigerated and pressurized, ammonia
requires special equipment and technology to transport, store, and
apply. It is applied by injecting it into the subsoil, where it
reverts to a gaseous state and combines with the soil’s moisture to
provide the essential nitrogen nutrient.
CF Industries' Ammonia Production
is at its Donaldsonville, LA and
Medicine Hat, Alberta nitrogen complexes. The company’s ammonia
distribution network, composed of 19 ammonia terminals located
primarily in the U.S. Corn Belt, provides in-market availability for
agricultural customers during the spring and fall application
seasons, and on a year-round basis for industrial customers.
