CF Industries formed a joint venture to develop the world’s largest low-carbon ammonia production facility at CF Industries’ Blue Point Complex in Ascension Parish, Louisiana. This venture marks a significant milestone in building a reliable and affordable low-carbon ammonia value chain to meet emerging demand for ammonia as a clean energy source. The facility commenced construction in 2026 and is expected to begin production in 2029.

Project Overview

CF Industries' Blue Point Complex is located along the Mississippi River in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, approximately nine miles north of CF Industries' existing Donaldsonville Complex. The Blue Point One site is intentionally designed to serve both the American heartland and the global economy. Blue Point One is intended to have the lowest environmental impact of any world class ammonia facility in the world.

Total Ammonia Production Facility Investment

Approximately $3.7 billion in direct project development, shared by equity partners

Construction Timeline

Pre-construction activities began in 2025. Permitting was approved and construction groundbreaking occurred in 2026. Production of ammonia is expected to begin in 2029

Annual Nameplate Production Capacity

Approximately 1.4 million metric tons of low-carbon ammonia

Carbon Capture and Sequestration

Carbon dioxide generated by the ammonia production process will be captured and permanently sequestered by 1PointFive, an Occidental and Enbridge, Inc. subsidiary

Scalable Infrastructure Investment

Estimated additional $550 million by CF Industries to build scalable common infrastructure at the site

Global Leadership, Local Impact

Since 1966, CF Industries has been investing and growing in Ascension Parish and Louisiana. Our joint venture with JERA and Mitsui at our Blue Point Complex located in Modeste in Ascension Parish leverages the area’s resources and competitive workforce advantages to serve the global ammonia market and further invests in the partnerships we've built in Donaldsonville and other communities across the state.

Global industry benefits

  • Foundational project for global nitrogen manufacturinglow-carbon ammonia value chain, fostering demand growth for low-carbon ammonia as a clean energy source.
  • Supports national economic and energy leadership goals and extends CF Industries’ commitment to American manufacturing.
  • Certifiable and quantifiable reduction in carbon intensity of ammonia produced differentiates our product in the global marketplace.
  • Expected to have one of the lowest environmental footprints of any ammonia production facility in the world, with greater than 95% of carbon dioxide generated by the ammonia production process captured and permanently sequestered
  • Leverages low-cost, abundant North American natural gas for ammonia production

Local economic benefits

  • Estimated 3,900 construction jobs over four years, totaling approximately $800 million in wages and benefits
  • Expected to support an additional 3,400 indirect and induced jobs over the same time period
  • Estimated $550 million to be spent in Louisiana for materials, manufacturing, machinery and equipment and other expenditures during construction [EM1.1]and to support future ammonia production and fertilizer upgrades
  • Once operational, the facility is projected to provide 103 permanent full-time jobs with an average salary of approximately $110,000 per year
  • Louisiana’s skilled outstanding workforce will help fill these highly technical rolesBlue Point operations will support an additional estimated 210 indirect and induced jobs annually

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the Blue Point One project?
In April 2025, CF Industries announced a joint venture with JERA Co. and Mitsui & Co. to develop the world’s largest low-carbon ammonia production facility — Blue Point One — at CF Industries’ Blue Point Complex in Ascension Parish, Louisiana.

There, the joint venture will construct a state-of-the-art ammonia production facility leveraging autothermal reforming (ATR) and carbon capture and sequestration technologies.

  2. Why is CF Industries developing Blue Point One?
American farmers and the agriculture sector depend on a reliable supply of nitrogen products to grow the food that feeds and fuels the American people and the world. Blue Point One will ensure American farmers have reliable access to the nitrogen products they need, when they need them.

The United States holds a significant competitive advantage in ammonia production thanks to abundant, low-cost natural gas in America. By building the largest ammonia facility in the world in Louisiana, CF Industries is strengthening the United States as a growing and dependable global manufacturer and supplier for ammonia and nitrogen products.

  3. How will carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) at Blue Point One work to reduce emissions?
Blue Point One is expected to capture, compress, and dehydrate approximately 2.3 million metric tons of CO2 This process is known as carbon capture and sequestration (CCS).

Carbon dioxide () is a byproduct of most ammonia production today. Blue Point One is intended to have the lowest environmental impact; more than 95% of the facility's CO2 emissions will be captured and permanently stored underground rather than released into the atmosphere as permitted.

CO2 captured annually at Blue Point One will be safely transported and permanently sequestered by our partner, 1PointFive, an Occidental and Enbridge, Inc. subsidiary.

  4. What impact will Blue Point One have on Ascension Parish and the surrounding communities?

For the past 60 years in Donaldsonville, and now in Modeste, CF Industries has worked with our neighbors to support community needs by investing in programs with positive economic, social, educational and environmental impacts.

Along with our Blue Point joint venture partners, CF Industries' recent community investments include:
    - A nearly $1.8 million, multi-year investment initiative supporting a new Groceries on the Geaux Mobile Market to bring healthy food options at affordable prices into Modeste, Ascension Parish, and the surrounding areas. bringing healthy food options directly into neighborhoods at affordable prices.

    - The purchase of additional life-saving equipment for West Ascension first responders.

    - Supporting renovations of the Crescent Park restroom facilities for community access.

    - Supporting workforce development initiatives in Ascension Parish, including the Introduction to Process Technology Program at Donaldsonville High School, skilled craft/trade scholarships for local students at River Parishes Community College, internship opportunities, and adult education initiatives.

Blue Point One will also bring in long-term economic opportunity to the West Bank of Ascension Parish through high-paying permanent manufacturing and engineering jobs and thousands of construction jobs over four years.
