Community Notice: Use of Port Neal's Ammonia Plant Flare Stack

Residents in the Siouxland area surrounding Port Neal may see a significant flame rise from the plant’s 320-foot-tall flare stack. The flare stack is in use as part of the commissioning process for the site's new ammonia plant, and the visible flame means that the new plant is operating as designed. Go here for more information about this common safety feature.

General Information

The Port Neal Nitrogen Facility is located on 1,700 acres in the Port Neal Industrial Complex along the Missouri River, approximately 15 miles south of Sioux City, Iowa, in the heart of the U.S. Corn Belt.

Annual Capacity

Up to 850,000 tons of nitrogen products for agricultural and industrial use

There are approximately 270 permanent employees at the Port Neal facility.

In addition, the company’s expansion project will create up to 5,000 construction jobs at peak and an estimated 700 jobs in related industries.

In 2012, CF announced a major capacity expansion project at Port Neal that is scheduled to be completed in 2016. When it was announced, the project was the largest in Iowa's history, and takes advantage of the proximity to abundant natural gas and a skilled local workforce. The expansion triples our facility's production of ammonia and granular urea, contributes to a more assured supply of nitrogen fertilizer for American farmers and has a positive long-term direct and indirect economic impact to the Siouxland region.

At the Port Neal facility we support a number of nonprofit organizations through both volunteerism and charitable giving, including:

  • United Way of Siouxland
  • Future Farmers of America
  • Little League
  • Science fairs
  • Toys for Tots
  • Siouxland Habitat for Humanity
  • Ronald McDonald House
  • Environmental conservation groups
  • Local chambers of commerce
  • Other Business Organizations
