Blue Point Complex

Helping build a global low-carbon ammonia value chain in Ascension Parish, Louisiana

CF Industries has formed a joint venture to develop the world’s largest low-carbon ammonia production facility at CF Industries’ Blue Point Complex in Ascension Parish, Louisiana. This venture marks a significant milestone in building a reliable and affordable low-carbon ammonia value chain to meet emerging demand for low-carbon ammonia as a clean energy source.

Joint Venture Partners

World's largest producer of ammonia

Japan's largest energy company

A leading global investment and trading company

Project Overview

CF Industries' Blue Point Complex is located along the Mississippi River in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, approximately 9 miles north of CF Industries' existing Donaldsonville Complex. There, the joint venture will construct an autothermal reforming (ATR) ammonia production facility with a carbon dioxide dehydration and compression unit at the site to prepare captured CO2 for transportation and sequestration.

Total Ammonia Prodcution Facility Investment

Approximately $4 billion in direct project development, shared by equity partners

Scalable Infrastructure Investment

Estimated additional $550 million by CF Industries to build scalable common infrastructure at the site

Construction Timeline

Production of low-carbon ammonia expected in 2029

Annual Nameplate Production Capacity

Approximately 1.4 million metric tons of low-carbon ammonia

Carbon Capture and Sequestration

Approximately 2.3 million metric tons of carbon dioxid generated on an annual basis by the ammonia production process will be captured and permanently sequestered by 1PointFive, an Occidental subsidiary

Global Leadership, Local Impact

Since 1966, CF Industries has been investing and growing in Ascension Parish and Louisiana. Our joint venture with JERA and Mitsui at our Blue Point Complex in Ascension Parish leverages the area’s natural resources and competitive workforce advantages to serve the global ammonia market and further invests in the partnerships we've built in Donaldsonville and other communities across the state.

Foundational project for global low-carbon ammonia value chain, fostering demand growth for low-carbon ammonia as a clean energy source.

Supports national economic and energy leadership goals and extends CF Industries’ commitment to American manufacturing.

Certifiable and quantifiable reduction in carbon intensity of ammonia produced differentiates product in global marketplace.

Expected to have one of the lowest environmental footprints of any ammonia production facility in the world, with greater than 95% of carbon dioxide generated by the ammonia production process captured and permanently sequestered

Leverages low-cost and plentiful North American natural gas for ammonia production

Local economic impact benefits:

  • Estimated 3,900 construction jobs over four years, bringing approximately $800 million in wages and benefits
  • Expected to support an additional 3,400 indirect and induced jobs over the same time period
  • Estimated $550 million to be spent in Louisiana for materials, manufacturing, machinery and equipment and other expenditures during construction
  • Once operational, facility is projected to have 103 permanent full-time jobs with an average salary of approximately $110,000 per year
  • Operations will support an additional estimated 210 indirect and induced jobs annually
