Emissions Control and Other Industrial Applications

Beyond Agriculture

Ammonia and its derivative products have numerous uses beyond agriculture.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid

Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is made from urea liquor mixed with de-ionized water. DEF reduces particulate matter and nitrous oxide emission to near zero levels through selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology.

When CF purchased Terra Industries in 2010, we added a nascent DEF business of 8,000 urea-equivalent tons of sales to our portfolio. DEF reduces NOx emissions and improves fuel efficiency, and is now required in all heavy-truck engines built in North America in order to meet emissions regulations.

To meet this growing demand, we focused the right resources on business development, executing an effective marketing strategy and investing in production reliability. In 2017, we completed a new 400,000 urea-equivalent ton per year DEF unit at our Donaldsonville facility on time and under budget, with returns well above our cost of capital. We also expanded our DEF rail car fleet and storage tanks.

We are now the largest and most reliable supplier of DEF in North America.

CF Industries’ largest “Other” product by sales volume is diesel exhaust fluid (DEF); the Company is the largest producer of DEF in North America. North American demand for DEF has grown from 0 gallons in 2010 to more than 1.1 billion gallons in 2021 – the equivalent of 1.6-1.7 million tons of urea. Customers include major truck stop chains and large retail wholesalers.
