CF Industries strives to be an active part of every community where it operates, and the company’s Medicine Hat Nitrogen Complex is no exception. That commitment was recently recognized with the Medicine Hat Chamber of Commerce’s 2017 Business Award for Community Involvement.

As Missy Fandrick, the executive director of the United Way of Southeastern Alberta, wrote in support of CF’s nomination for the award, “The employees and management realize that profits do not precede people, and they show this by giving back to the community.”

The complex has always had a focus on not just being involved and engaged in a variety of community activities, but also being a long-time partner with local organizations. That focus was amplified in 2016 as they used the plant’s 40th anniversary in 2016 as additional motivation for their efforts.

The team adopted the theme “40 for 40” and applied it each quarter when donating to a local organization. In the first quarter of 2016, they donated 40 bag lunches for 40 days. In the second, they donated 40 days at YMCA summer camp. In the third quarter, they contributed 40 day passes to the Medicine Hat Leisure Center to moms and kids at the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter. And in the fourth quarter, they supported the Movember Foundation of Canada, raising funds to support awareness for men’s health.

The 2016 “40 for 40” efforts were just one part of the Medicine Hat team’s involvement in the community. Among the initiatives:

  • The plant donated more than $93,000 to the United Way of SE Alberta, and was recognized with “The Chairman’s Cup,” recognizing the largest fundraising campaign overall for the year.
  • The Medicine Hat & District Health Foundation received a donation to purchase a CPAP Machine to be used in the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.
  • The complex was the title sponsor for the Medic Air Society’s golf tournament, supporting its HALO medevac service.
  • The team supported Planetary Percussion Ltd., which provides support for emergency responders and veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, in recognition of the support the plant relies on from local first responders in the event of an emergency.
  • CF has been a long-time supporter of the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter, including as a sponsor of the Shelter’s “Bread and Roses Gala.”

The Medicine Hat Nitrogen Complex’s total contributions to local organizations in 2016 were more than $135,000.
